Mini diggers & mini skid steers. From China: what to look for?
Many compact diggers and loaders now come from China, including brands such as Rippa and VMENG. The price is often attractive. Whether buying pays off, however, depends on the papers, the components fitted and above all the question of who helps you when a part is missing.

Origin alone says little
Machines are built in China for very different requirements: from cheap direct imports with no point of contact to manufacturers with long experience and components from well-known brands. VMENG has been building mini skid steers for more than 23 years.
Three things make the difference: what papers the machine has, what's inside it and who stands behind it locally.
Check the CE mark and papers
- CE marking on the machine and an EU declaration of conformity that matches the serial number.
- Operating manual in your language. In the EU it is part of the scope of delivery.
- Type plate with manufacturer, model, serial number and year of manufacture.
- Emission Stage V: this emission stage applies in the EU to diesel engines in new mobile machinery. The engine plate tells you.
Anyone who imports a machine themselves from a country outside the EU takes on obligations that the dealer would otherwise bear. On top of that come customs duty, import VAT and the question of whom you turn to in the event of a defect.
Engine and hydraulics: branded parts make the difference
Ask about the manufacturers of the most important components. For well-known engines and hydraulic parts, spare parts and specialist workshops are available worldwide.
| Component | What to look for | Example from our range |
|---|---|---|
| Engine | Well-known manufacturer, emission Stage V | Kubota D722 in the Rippa R15 Eco, Yanmar in the VMENG SAM 1950 |
| Hydraulic pump | Brand and flow to suit the attachments | Bosch Rexroth piston pump in the VMENG SAM 1950 |
| Travel motor | Brand, tightness, spare parts | Poclain in the VMENG SAM 1200 and SAM 1950 |
| Undercarriage and frame | Sturdy design, adjustable track tension | Twin-roller undercarriage in the VMENG SAM 1200 |
You'll find all details in the data sheets of our machines, for example for the Rippa R15 Eco.
The most important point: spare parts and workshop
Every machine needs a part at some point. What matters is how quickly it arrives and who fits it. Before buying, clarify who supplies the parts, whether there's a warehouse nearby and who services the machine.
At Derette in Elkenroth, Germany, you get advice, demonstrations, maintenance and spare parts from one source. You request a spare part with machine, serial number and photo. More on the Service page.
