Yard loader.Or mini skid steer?

Both load, lift and carry material. Yet a yard loader and a mini skid steer work in completely different ways. If you know the differences, you buy the machine that really suits your own yard, garden or business.

The difference in two sentences

A yard loader is a small, articulated wheel loader with a driver's seat. It's at home in farmyards, barns and agriculture.

A mini skid steer, also called a mini loader or mini skid steer, usually runs on tracks. You stand on a platform at the rear, steering is via the tracks, and the machine turns on the spot. The lift arms at the front carry a bucket, forks or hydraulic attachments.

When a yard loader is the better choice

If you mainly muck out the barn, move feed and shuttle between buildings on paved paths, the yard loader comes into its own. You sit comfortably, drive quickly and the wheels handle yard paving well.

If exactly this work is your main focus, we'll tell you so openly during the consultation.

When a mini skid steer comes into its own

  • Tight access: narrow models such as the Derette V1000 at 900 mm wide fit through many garden gates. The guide to narrow access shows how to measure correctly.
  • Rough terrain and soft ground: the tracked undercarriage spreads the weight over a large area and stays on course even on uneven ground.
  • Hydraulic tools: forestry mulchers, stump grinders, post hole augers and trenchers need sufficient hydraulic power. The VMENG VM1000 delivers 48 l/min, the VMENG SAM 1950 79.8 l/min.
  • Transport: the VMENG models weigh between 1,400 and 2,150 kg and can be taken to the job on a suitable trailer.

Which attachments suit which job is explained under Attachments for gardens and landscaping.

Buying a used yard loader: what you should check.

Many buyers look for a used yard loader because the price is lower. That can be worthwhile if you check the machine thoroughly first. These points belong in every inspection:

  • Articulation joint and bearings: play in the joint and in the lift arm pins shows how hard the machine has worked.
  • Hydraulics: cylinders, hoses and connections must be leak-free. Lift a full bucket and check whether it stays up.
  • Engine and operating hours: start it from cold, watch for smoke and noises and ask to see the service record.
  • Tyres and drive: worn tyres and noises in the travel drive quickly become expensive.
  • Papers and spare parts: CE marking, operating manual and the question of who supplies parts and repairs it.

If you mainly work in the garden, off-road or through narrow gates, compare the used yard loader with a new mini skid steer too. The mini skid steer buying checklist helps with both.

How to find your machine

  • Which jobs come up most often, and which will be added later?
  • How wide is the narrowest passage on the way to the job?
  • What ground will you drive on: paving, lawn, forest floor?
  • Which attachments do you need now and in future?
  • How does the machine get to changing job locations?

With these answers you can compare the machines in our overview in a targeted way. The comparison with mini diggers and compact tractors can be found in the article Mini digger or mini skid steer?

Describe your main jobs, the narrowest access and the ground. We'll tell you openly whether a mini skid steer suits you, and which one.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a yard loader and a mini skid steer?

The yard loader runs on wheels with articulated steering and is operated seated. The mini skid steer usually runs on tracks, steers via the tracks and is operated standing.

Is a mini skid steer a small wheel loader?

Not quite. A wheel loader steers via an articulation joint, a mini skid steer via the different speeds of its left and right tracks or wheels.

Which loader fits through a garden gate?

What matters is the width of the version offered. Narrow mini skid steers are available from 900 mm. Measure the narrowest point and allow some clearance.

What should I look for in a used yard loader?

Check the articulation joint and bearings for play, the hydraulics for leaks, the engine on a cold start, the tyres and travel drive, as well as papers and spare parts supply.

Can a mini skid steer lift pallets too?

Yes, with pallet forks. The permissible load depends on the model and attachment and is stated in the data sheet.
